consequences of being

all my life
they’ve tried to tame me,
but i’m still wild;
consequence of being
a moon child
i’m afraid—
but i do not regret my
midnights nor my thorns
sometimes the light
isn’t kind,
and sometimes the darkness
is;
and i was born at night
with only stars and moonlight
to guide me into being—
i appreciate the
special beauty of the night,
but they want me to be golden
like the sun and speak softly
as the petals of tulips;
but i am the hearty crocus
who rises no matter how many
times it snows in spring
and i am the moonlight
sharp and silver with fangs that
could cut a river into being—
they only want my calm waters
not my hurricanes,
they only want my dreams not my nightmares
but both are a part of me;
and i will not apologize for it.
